It is not everyday you hear about acts of charity. Taiga Adventure Camp (Taiga) would like to thank a very special eight-year old girl from Yellowknife, NT – Miss Janet Enge. Janet is in grade 2 at J.H. Sissons in French Immersion, and can teach us all a lesson in giving.

It is unusual to see such a spirit of giving in one so young, but for two years now Janet has focused on raising money for charity at her birthday celebration instead of getting presents. Janet’s parents are very proud of her generosity, and taking action to help others.

Janet learned about Taiga’s summer camp program from the YWCA Yellowknife Gift Catalogue, and we feel very fortunate she chose Taiga. Thanks to Janet we are thrilled to be able to award a very lucky young woman with a free camp registration for our 2011 season!

Janet is an inspiration at how one person can make a difference in the lives of others. Her story warmed the hearts of all of us at Taiga and YWCA Yellowknife. We encourage everyone to think about how they might be able to help another person today.

‘We Day is created by Free The Children to celebrate the power of young people to create positive change. We Day is a day-long event that ignites a year-long program for change, called We Schools in Action. In cities across Canada, the event brings inspirational speeches and performances to young leaders. Students then bring that energy home to take action on local and international issues all year long. Free The Children’s We Day is the celebration, the inspiration and the vehicle for young people to change the world.’

A place to discover your leadership potential.

On August 4th, six canoes, nine campers and three fearless leaders, departed the shores of the Mackenzie River in Ft. Simpson to head for Willow Lake River, near Wrigley. Campers came from communities as diverse as Aklavik and Hay River.

Over the course of seven days we paddled over 150km!!!

Highlights of the trip include: multiple mud baths in the clay-lined shores of the Mackenzie, singing really loudly on the river… amazing food; animal sightings including five bears and a porcupine; paddling (building muscle); campfires; developing our teambuilding and leadership skills through challenging exercises and communication activities; as well as experiencing the lesser joys (no outhouses) of camp life… but mostly, we celebrated the greater ones, such as the gift of the Mackenzie River itself and the reward of adventure, achievement and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

In 2010 Taiga transitioned from land-operations in Ft. Smith to a site off the grid beyond Yellowknife.

Additionally, we piloted a river-camp on the Mackenzie, between Ft. Simpson and Willow Lake River in the Deh Cho.

In total, over 80 girls from every region of the NWT, participated in Taiga 2010 camps; including new and returning campers from our two previous years. The focus of the programming was on leadership and outdoor adventure. Campers participated in activities ranging from song writing to kayaking, mask-making, traditional knowledge, drama and canoe-tripping.

It has been an excellent summer; throughout which, we have received many calls and emails from campers and parents telling us about their great Taiga summer adventures.

We asked campers the question “What difference did Taiga make for You?”. Here are some example of what they have said:

“I won’t be shy when I go back. I will do different things like go to the bush with my Dad.”

“I used to think the North was boring but now I know there are things to do. Also, I realize now that if I put my mind to something I can do it even if I don’t think so at the beginning.”

“I know to open the book and read it instead of judging by the cover.”

“I know to pick up after myself and not litter anymore and care for the environment more.

“I will relate to others differently by trusting them more.”

“When I am around town or anything like that, traveling or so, I don’t know how I should act. But being at Taiga gave me a boost. I don’t need to worry about what people think of me. I just need to worry about who I am.”

We love hearing from you!!! Please stay in touch as the coming year unfolds…

Happy Fall & Best Wishes for a great semester at School.
